Jowan Iven.

We've asked, when did you start with photography?

Jowan found it hard to say. As a teenager he photographed with film, but it was not very serious. It all really took off when he had his first digital DSLR, a Nikon D90 in 2009. From that moment on he explored the world of nature more intense and wanted to improve himself. That still hasn't changed.

Are you currently making a lot of photos?

Jowan had a question back, because what is a lot?

Lightroom tells Jowan that it differs per year from about 12000 to more than 22000 images per year. That is without the deleted images. He tends to make less pictures nowdays. It greatly depends on the subject. When he is in a creative mood it takes a lot of experimenting and a lot of crappy pictures before he gets a photo he is happy with.

How do you share your photos?

Jowan uses a lot of different platforms. Next to his website he posts pictures on Instagram, Facebook and deeldenatuur.nl. He started using the app Vero because he wasn't happy with the commercials and reels on Instagram. Still, it turns out that Instagram and Facebook are the main platforms where Jowan shares his pictures. Jowan has a strong connection with trees as a subject and he reflects that in his timeline. But other subjects like water and rocks are his favorites too, as well as for some intimate landscapes or with an abstract approach.

And, what is your main goal?

His main goal is to enjoy nature. His camera just comes along. Jowan himself said that he is not a professional and don't aspire to be one. But as stated earlier, he is always interested to improve his skills. That implies that he has to step out of his comfort zone to take on new challenges.

"The images I have the deepest connection with are not always my best"

Stories from Jowan.

Years ago on Iceland on the way back to the airfield, there was a storm on the beach of Vik. The view over the ocean was fantastic but is was too dangerous for the equipment to stay outside. With the blasting sand and all. So I stayed in the jeep and watched (and photographed) it all safely from the car. After the storm I wanted to wipe the windscreen because you hardly could see through. It turned out that the front of the whole car, including the front window was sand blasted. I was happy with the images of the storm but not so with the big bill from the rental company. Luckily the insurance covered it all in the end.

Something that is important for me is respect for Nature. And in my case especially a warm heart for trees. I already photographed trees before they became a symbol for cooling the planet. Now it is even more important for me to show everyone their beauty and importance. With so many people out there we have to protect the natural environment that's left. Nature is more important than a possible photo. Keep that in mind when photographing.

At last we've asked for his favorite photo.

There is no such picture. My favorite images change over time together with new experiences, ideas and the mood I'm in. The images I have the deepest connection with are not always my best.
